So They Just Announced Another Goddamn JOKER Movie For Some Reason
Last night, the world stood dumbfounded in the face of the news that Warner Bros. was moving forward with a Joker origin movie, to be produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips. "Well, that's the weirdest goddamn thing we're going to hear all week," we said, shaking our heads in disbelief.
Well, now this is happening:
"(Glenn Ficarra and John Requa) are in final negotiations to write and direct an untitled movie project centering on Batman villains Joker and Harley Quinn.
Jared Leto and Margot Robbie are due to reprise their roles as the villains, among the most popular characters in the DC pantheon, and which they first portrayed in 2016’s Suicide Squad."
That's the Hollywood Reporter breaking the astonishing news that Warner Bros. has announced another Joker movie, this one focused on the relationship between Suicide Squad's Juggaloker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (a deserves-better Margot Robbie). It will be written and directed by - who else - the very same duo that brought you Crazy, Stupid Love. Sure, why not? That makes as much sense as anything else happening here.
THR goes on to explain that the Joker/Harley Quinn movie is intended to arrive after Suicide Squad 2, but that both projects are in the process of being fast-tracked "to contend with actors' holding agreements". As you know, if there were ever a good reason to spend millions upon millions of dollars rushing a film literally no one is asking for through production, it's "to contend with actors' holding agreements". Solid foundation, fam.
Two final details. One, the Hollywood Reporter also says that this will be a "criminal love story" (bad news for anyone who was betting on the Joker/Harley Quinn movie to be an erotic space opera, or a musical western), and two, it will take place within the already-established DCEU, unlike Matt Reeves' The Batman or the other Joker movie that was literally announced just 24 hours ago.
Got all that? Good. Hit the comments with your reaction. We're all ears.
