Trailer For HBO Short Film TOKYO PROJECT Feels Ethereally Familiar

Elisabeth Moss gets lost in translation.

HBO’s short film presentation of Tokyo Project is an intriguing proposition coming from the great cable network. It’s a way to showcase idiosyncratic cinema from unique talents (in this case, The Matador writer/director Richard Shepard), while not being a brand new series or feature length film. Pretty smart, actually, and perhaps something our new media channels can introduce across the board.

Starring Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Lola Versus), there’s a lovely ethereal quality to the tale of two strangers meeting and bonding in the titular city. Shades of Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation abound, though it seems Project delves into a much more physical relationship than that film did.

Take a look at the trailer:

Tokyo Project was an official selection at this year’s Tribeca Film Fest, and is set to air on HBO October 14. Produced by Lena Dunham, there’s a full-blown Girls reunion going on (as both Shepard and Moss-Bachrach worked on the hit series), and we here at BMD should have some rather spectacular coverage of the film coming very soon.

Stay tuned.
