A SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Show Is In The Works At CW!
This is the BEST news: the team behind Riverdale (showrunner and Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, multiple episode director Lee Toland Krieger and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater) are developing a brand-new one-hour drama based on Aguirre-Sacasa's tremendous Chilling Adventures of Sabrina run.
I wrote at length here about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and what we can expect from the character should she ever pop up on Riverdale, but it's even better that Sabrina's already magicked up a series of her very own. Of course, The CW has to make the final call to move forward with the show, but considering the success of Riverdale and Berlanti's other CW projects, it feels like a foregone conclusion.
A summary from Variety:
The potential series would be based on the Archie Comics series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
If you haven't read the book yet, grab it at the below link. It's mind-meltingly great, and since Aguirre-Sacasa is both author and showrunner, it's likely the book will inform the series in a significant way.
So will Sabrina show up in a late Season 2 episode of Riverdale that serves as a backdoor pilot? Here's hoping. Now please excuse me to go be very smug about the fact that my Madam Satan Halloween costume will be rather prescient this year.
