Edgar Wright Is Writing BABY DRIVER 2

Baby Driver becoming a hit is one of 2017's sweetest surprises - an original action picture helmed by a great director, who was finally getting to put a dream he'd been harboring for twenty-odd years to film. Not everyone dug Edgar Wright's action/musical opus (though it did incredibly well with critics), but the fact that it exists at all should be celebrated.

The movie made $200+ million worldwide, which in studio logic means one thing: sequel. Speaking with EW, it sounds like Wright is combing through the fine details with Sony to follow up his tune-addicted getaway driver's first adventure:

"Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one. I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually. I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things things that I’ve been offered since [the release of Baby Driver]. I would like to get back on the saddle very shortly, because — slightly beyond my control — but there was four years between The World’s End and Baby Driver. I don’t want it to be that long again. I would love to have a film out in the next two years.”

So, it sounds like there's a solid chance that Wright just writes Baby Driver 2, and then hands it off to another filmmaker (hey, what's Joe Cornish up to right now?). Not sure how exciting that sounds, to be perfectly honest. Most of what made the original so daring was Wright's go-for-broke style. If he's not stepping behind the camera again, then the studio would have to choose someone equally energetic. We'll just have to wait and see what happens once the deal is finalized.
