The Disney/Fox Deal Won’t Convince Hugh Jackman To Play Wolverine Again

LOGAN really was Jackman's swan song.

Back in February, just prior to the release of James Mangold's Logan, Hugh Jackman casually mentioned that if a cinematic X-Men/Avengers crossover had been possible, he might've stuck around to play Wolverine another time or two.

Smash cut to: this month. The threat of a Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox is in the air and Hugh Jackman's got a brand-new film (The Greatest Showman) headed for theaters, which means it's time, once again, to ask him how he'd feel about strapping on Wolverine's claws one last time (again).

In a new interview with Collider, Jackman puts the possibility to bed once and for all:

“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’

But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

Two thoughts here: one, this isn't entirely surprising - Jackman's already said his goodbyes to this character, both publicly and privately, and the very idea of wading back into those waters must seem incredibly daunting now that he's on the other side.

Secondly: Jackman's right - it's time for a new actor to step into this role, especially if we're talking about the possibility of the X-Men being folded into the MCU in the wake of the Fox/Disney merger. We need new blood for that.
