Christian Bale Is Content To Just Hear About Your Superhero Movies, Thank You Very Much

On a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, former Dark Knight Christian Bale offers up a few thoughts on the current superhero movie landscape ... and reveals that he came very close to playing a part in Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story. 

For starters, Bale says he hasn't seen the new DC stuff:

“I have not (seen Affleck's Batman yet). Yes, I’m interested (in seeing it), my son seemed like he was really interested, but then I realized he just wanted to see the trailer and that was it – I tend to go see films that (my kids) want to see. I have to confess I’m not a huge superhero film fan. People seem surprised at that, I don’t know why. I’ve not seen any of the Avengers films or any of those films at all. I hear they’re very good, but I’m quite happy just hearing they’re very good.”

Look, I enjoy checking out new Marvel tentpoles as much as the next guy, but "I’m quite happy just hearing they’re very good" is a level of casual dismissiveness I think we should all aspire to in 2018. Bale is a master at delivering this kind of unimpressed shade. 

As for his near involvement in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Bale says:

“Yes, (it was) very tempting. I not only love the films going back to my childhood but also have a very long relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall because they did Empire of the Sun many years back. There was discussion, (and) I hope there will be future discussions.”

What part might Bale have played? Dark Horizons theorizes that Bale would've been playing the "mentor" role that was ultimately filled by Woody Harrelson, and that sounds like as good a guess as any to our ears.
