Todd McFarlane Vows: SPAWN ‘Will Not Be A Lot Of Fun’

Well, yeah.

If there's one thing Todd McFarlane loves more than actually making the Spawn movie he's been threatening to direct for the past decade, it's talking about the Spawn movie he's been threatening to direct for the past decade.

A few weeks ago, McFarlane popped up in a new azcentral interview, where he reiterated his claim that the new Spawn movie would be kind of like Jaws. Today, he's here to assure us that Spawn will not be following in the footsteps of 2016's wildly successful Deadpool, eschewing frivolity and fun in the name of making a legit, R-rated superhero movie where the stakes have actual heft.

Says McFarlane (as quoted by The Playlist):

“It’s funny in Hollywood, if you say you want to do an R-rated movie, they go like ‘Oh like Deadpool and like Logan?’ For me, no. Deadpool, to me, was a PG-13 action movie. It just had some naked butts and a couple f-bombs. Other than that, I thought it was the same PG-13 formula.

“I’m talking R, I’m talking that there will not be a lot of fun, there will not be be any stupid lines in it… I never like my hero to make a joke right when the jeopardy was at its highest. So if I felt that my hero wasn’t afraid right now, why should I be?… I want my heroes to go ‘Shit, what do I do now?’.”

You heard the man: Spawn will not follow the the same PG-13 formula laid out by Deadpool. It will not be "a lot of fun". Were you hoping that Spawn might contain "stupid lines" or "jokes"? Well, bad news, my man: there'll be none of that in Spawn. That's the Todd McFarlane Guarantee™.

Anyhoo, Spawn - which, again, will mark the directorial debut of Todd McFarlane - should be along at some point, and we'll be following along every step of the way. Stay tuned for further updates as they become available. Eventually we'll probably have a trailer and everything!
