AGFA And Shaw Brothers Bringing 30 Hong Kong Classics Back To Cinemas

Get ready to enter the 36th Chamber Of Awesome.

We like the folks at the American Genre Film Archive. They do important work, devoted as they are to maintaining, restoring, exhibiting, and re-releasing a vast collection of weird genre films that would otherwise be forgotten about due to obscurity or unprofitability. Already, they've teamed with publishers like Arrow, Severin, Something Weird, and Vinegar Syndrome to give a variety of cult classics a new lease on life.

AGFA's latest partnership is its biggest yet. Teaming with the legendary Shaw Brothers Studio, it will give theatrical runs to 30 newly-restored Hong Kong films throughout 2018. The list is varied and incredibly exciting to Shaw fans, including but not limited to classics from the studio's massive martial arts library:

  • Bastard Swordsman (1983, aka Reincarnate Swordsman)
  • Black Magic 2 (1976, aka Revenge of the Zombies)

  • The Boxer’s Omen (1983)
  • The Brave Archer (1977)
  • Buddha’s Palm (1982, aka Kungfu Warlord)
  • Come Drink With Me (1966)
  • Crippled Avengers (1978, aka Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms)
  • Dirty Ho (1979)
  • The Duel (1971, aka Duel of the Iron Fist)
  • The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1983)
  • The Five Venoms (1978, aka Five Deadly Venoms)
  • Golden Swallow (1968, aka The Girl with the Thunderbolt Kick)
  • The Heroic Ones (1970)
  • Holy Flame of the Martial World (1983)
  • Human Lanterns (1982)
  • Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972)
  • King Boxer (1972, aka The Five Fingers Of Death)
  • Legendary Weapons of China (1982)
  • Mad Monkey Kung Fu (1979)
  • Masked Avengers (1981)
  • Martial Arts of Shaolin (1986, aka Shaolin Temple 3)
  • The Mighty Peking Man (1977, aka Goliathon)

  • The Super Inframan (1975)
  • Vengeance (1970, aka Kung Fu Vengeance)
  • The Water Margin (1972, aka Seven Blows of the Dragon)

There's so much good stuff in that list, I can hardly even stand it. Some of the best martial arts films ever made are represented here, and if you're into weirder genre-heavy stuff, y’all are going to lose your minds watching the likes of Boxer's Omen or Black Magic 2 or Mighty Peking Man or The Super Infra-Man. These are big movies, and deserve to be seen on a big screen.

The films will begin to roll out, on DCP and 35mm, throughout 2018, though no concrete information is yet available regarding dates or venues. Bring it onnnnn.
