WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS TV Series Adds A Fish Man, A Lady Bird, And More
Look, I scoffed at the idea of an American TV spin-off to New Zealand's instant vampire-comedy classic What We Do In The Shadows too, at one point. But everything we've heard about this show just makes it sound better and better, to the point where it might just be one of my most-anticipated small-screen projects.
Case in point: today's casting announcement that Doug Jones, Beanie Feldstein, Mark Proksch, and Jake McDornan have all joined the upcoming FX pilot.
Doug Jones you know from his heavily made-up roles in The Shape of Water, Star Trek: Discovery, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, and the defeat of would-be senator Roy Moore; he'll surely play some sort of heavily made-up character in this show, given its subject material. Feldstein and McDornan were both straight-up incredible in Lady Bird. And Proksch, while probably best known for his roles on Better Call Saul and The Office, also delivered one of my favourite performances of last year as a deranged, low-budget "ghost assassin" in the supernatural dark comedy Another Evil. It's a performance (and, hell, a movie) that would feel right at home in the Shadows-verse.
Those four join the already-strong-as-fuck cast of Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Harvey Guillen, though their roles are said to be recurring rather than regular. And let's also not forget that Jemaine Clement is writing this thing and Taika Waititi is directing it.
That's all just for a pilot, mind; no series order has been issued as of yet. But I'm positively ravenous to find out whether this show will click together as magically as its feature source material did.
