Almost exactly one year ago, we learned that Disney was working on a new movie called Christopher Robin, which we said "sounds alarmingly like Hook." No one heeded our warning, and now it appears they've actually gone and made this movie (starring Ewan McGregor, no less), and guess what?
It's a lot like Hook.
Is it the worst thing in the world to be "a lot like Hook"? Not necessarily. It's entirely possible that Christopher Robin's writers only adopted the bones of that Spielberg joint for their story, and that director Marc Forster will deliver a film that succeeds where The Beard's failed. Casting McGregor in the titular role is certainly a step in the right direction, and we're admittedly kind of charmed by the effects used to bring Winnie the Pooh to life (I mean, let's be frank - he's no Paddington; but then, few are).
Here's the official plot synopsis, in case the trailer wasn't clear:
"In the heartwarming Christopher Robin, the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside."
Alright, Christopher Robin. You've earned your day in court, and you'll have it on August 3rd. What do you folks think? Gonna give Disney's Hook redux a go, or think you'll skip it? Sound off in the comments below, unless you're planning to mount a passionate defense of Hook, in which case we must preemptively agree to disagree.
