John Oliver Bought Russell Crowe’s Jockstrap To Display In An Alaskan Blockbuster Video

Every word of that headline is true.

Because this is the Brave Year of Our Lord 2018, I expected to see many strange things when I hopped online today: the President throwing a hissy fit on Twitter (check), the news that Rampage was #1 at the box office despite not being very good (check), people engaged in a ridiculous debate as to whether or not A Quiet Place is actually a horror movie (check). This is the world we live in now, and it doesn't always make a lot of sense. Whatcanyado?

But here's one thing I definitely didn't expect to read this morning:

"John Oliver on Sunday revealed that his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, did indeed buy the jockstrap Russell Crowe wore in Cinderella Man during the actor's recent divorce auction.

The only part of the news that was more entertaining was that Oliver said he was going to send the piece of movie history, along with a few other items of Crowe's from assorted films, to the last remaining Blockbuster Video in Alaska."

I'm sure you had no problem reading the above, but just in case, let's do a quick recap: John Oliver's Last Week Tonight purchased the jockstrap Russell Crowe wore in Ron Howard's Cinderella Man (along with several other personal bits of memorabilia Crowe's been auctioning off as part of his ongoing divorce proceedings) to display inside the last Blockbuster Video in Alaska. It's one of only a handful of remaining Blockbuster Videos, but there can be no doubt that it's now the most prestigious Blockbuster Video.

Oliver announced on the show that the Blockbuster in question has just 48 hours to contact Last Week Tonight in order to get their hands on, uh, the goods. The only question now is, will they take him up on the offer?

Stay tuned for more on this situation and whatever other insane news today brings (if we started out with a story about John Oliver buying Russell Crowe's Cinderella Man jockstrap, there's really no telling where this day might take us).
