First Photos From Cary Fukunaga’s MANIAC Tease A Colorful Nightmare

We admittedly give Netflix a ton of shit around these parts - what with the ongoing Cannes feud and total industry disruption - but a simple fact remains: they're still helping to empower some of the finer minds in our current crop of filmic artists. On top of new Original Features from Alfonso Cuarón and Martin Scorsese, Netflix is also letting Cary Fukunaga (whom they previously worked with on the possibly undervalued Beasts of No Nation) return to serialized narratives with his upcoming Maniac. 

Based on a '14 Norwegian series, Maniac is centered around a psychiatric experiment where patients are allowed live inside their own dreams and fantasies via technology. The 10-episode show is directed entirely by Fukunaga and written by novelist Patrick Somerville. It stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, and includes a supporting cast of Justin Theroux, Julia Garner, Sonoya Mizuno, Jemima Kirke, and Sally Field. That's a hell of a squad to help bring the True Detective auteur back to long-form storytelling (in a bigger way than TNT's The Alienist did). 

Now, we've got our first look at the visual aesthetic of Maniac via a few stills, and they promise a psychedelic bit of sci-fi that could possibly sit nicely next to Rainer Warner Fassbinder's landmark '73 German Mini-Series World On A Wire. Take a look:

There's sadly no release date set for Maniac as of yet, but Netflix expects to drop the series later this year. Count us as super excited based on these designs and actors alone.
