"With the right white man, we can do anything."
Look, when it first came out that Jordan Peele was producing Spike Lee's next joint, we were excited. Then, we found out BlacKkKlansman followed the true story (or "some fo' real fo' real shit") of African American detective Ron Stallworth (played here by John David Washington), who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan by becoming a member via an undercover sting operation, and we were through the roof. Now, we've gotten to see the first trailer for Lee's self-described "buddy cop comedy" and it looks like a potential all-timer.
Check this out:
So, there's a few things I love about this spot.
First off, Washington's constant use of "white voice" will make for one hell of a double feature with Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You. Secondly, BlacKkKlansman looks funny as shit, and seeing Adam Driver's Jewish partner react to Washington dropping a litany of racial slurs (which I'm assuming are dubbed over to obtain a green band) is an A+ visual gag. Third, the tension between Washington and Driver's cops regarding how they approach this investigation could be a great entry point for how different races view their oppression at the hands of white bigots. Fourth - holy shit there's even a signature Spike Lee dolly shot included for good measure.
In short, BlacKkKlansman was already on our list of "must see" cinema for the rest of '18. After that teaser, it may be at the very top.
Spike Lee and Jordan Peele's filmic lovechild hits theaters August 10th. I'll be the guy at every showing that day.
