Jake Gyllenhaal’s Gonna Play Mysterio in The SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel

(Assuming the negotiations pan out.)

Earlier today, word began circling via The Sun that Jake Gyllenhaal would be playing Mysterio in the highly-anticipated sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming. This was an interesting claim, one which sparked much discussion behind the scenes at BMD (we're a pro-Gyllenhaal household, and Mysterio is high on our list of Most Wanted Spider-Man Villains), but we chose to ignore it because...well, it's The Sun. You can't trust The Sun.

Cue the far more reliable Hollywood Reporter:

"[Jake] Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the classic Marvel villian Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Yes, if all goes according to plan, Jake Gyllenhaal will be taking on the role of Mysterio in whatever Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 ends up being called. There's literally no further information to go on at this time, but we don't even care: this is an awesome bit of casting.

It's also very exciting to imagine a Spider-Man movie featuring Mysterio. For those unfamiliar with the character, Mysterio is a VFX wiz by the name of Quentin Beck. When things don't pan out for him in Hollywood, Beck takes his talents for creating startlingly real illusions and puts them towards becoming a supervillain. Putting Mysterio onscreen means we're all but guaranteed to see some truly spectacular visual effects in the Homecoming sequel (picture the Scarecrow hallucination sequences from the Arkham video games, only less terrifying). We're imagining Gyllenhaal in full Nightcrawler mode for this role, and we couldn't be more hyped about it.

Nothing further to report at this moment, but we'll keep you informed as further updates roll in.
