Donald Glover Describes His Ideal Lando Movie As ‘FRASIER In Space’
We're two days away from Solo dropping on the globe's head and dominating every cinematic conversation for the next two weeks (that's the shelf life on these summer blockbusters, right?), so of course that means the film's cast are just gonna be dropping quote bomb after quote bomb while making the press rounds.
Always the entertaining interview subject, Donald Glover was chatting with Entertainment Weekly Radio, and tossed out a couple golden nuggets of knowledge, starting with his interest in throwing the cape back on to keep playing Young Lando Calrissian in further Star Wars stories:
"It would always be fun to be Lando again. I would love to do it again. It’s really fun. The movie, I feel like, is wide open. This part of the universe without the… I feel like with the Skywalkers, it’s hard, because it’s almost like the Bible. There’s a story that you have to tell, and the lineage of that family. I feel like out here its like, yeah, we’re just like hustlers and gamblers and space pirates, essentially, so you can do a lot more and have a lot more fun. And I like those movies a lot. I like the comedy of them, the silliness and also the adventure. I think it would just be fun to do.”
But when asked what his take on a Young Lando movie would look like - should Glover be hired to pick up a pen or step behind the camera - his answer was slightly unusual (though delightful for fans of '90s sitcoms):
"It would be cool to see, like, Frasier in space — like, a high-end guy in space. All of these characters are very specific and they have very specific points of view, so it’s always going to be fun to see them traveling around to a planet that is the opposite of what they’re used to…. And all of that seems like it would be fun to write, for sure. But it also is nice to not have to write that. It’s also nice to just, you know, show up in a cape and get pointed in the right direction.”
Frasier in space? Word. Wait - who would be Dr. Crane in that scenario, and who would be Niles? Han? Unfortunately, there was no elaboration to go with that response, but we can dream about Glover's vision all we want now.
Not to stir the pot - though what the hell else am I here for if I don't? - but it'll be fascinating to see people respond to Glover's Lando when Solo finally hits screens. For some, he steals the whole movie, with the actor/musician cranking up the charm to the max. For others, his performance is little more than a decent approximation of how we remember Billy Dee Williams' take on the character, becoming a glorified living cape rack, and that a Young Lando movie may not be the best idea.
Guess you'll have to make up your mind come Friday, when Ron Howard's Solo soars into theaters.
