The Right Fluff: Ryan Gosling Reaches For The Stars In FIRST MAN Trailer
I bet you First Man - Damien Chazelle's biopic about Neil Armstrong, the initial human to take "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" by walking on the moon - is pretty good. Judging by the first trailer, it's going to at the very least be gorgeous to look at. Yet it's tough to get too excited about the picture, because it looks like pure Oscar bait, complete with Gosling transforming Armstrong into another one of his mumbly, good looking protags.
The cast is amazing - Kyle Chandler, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott, Ciarán Hinds - yet there's just nothing here that really inspires any sort of awe. It just seems like a solid Awards-minded drama which is, well, kind of boring.
Take a look for yourself:
Sure, I'll watch it. But when you have Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff (which turns 35 this year) or Ron Howard's Apollo 13 sitting there on the shelf, the motivation to run right out to the theater is missing. Maybe watching entirely too many movies has made me cynical. Or, maybe it's just made me expect more from the folks who are supposed to be delivering our primo mainstream entertainment.
Anyway, First Man hits theaters October 12th.
