Jeremy Irons Just Joined HBO’s WATCHMEN Series

In which we are all given another reason to tune in to WATCHMEN.

According to Deadline, living legend Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of HBO's forthcoming Watchmen series in an unspecified role. This is one helluva get for the series, which is being spearheaded by Damon Lindelof and already counts Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson and Louis Gossett Jr. among its cast members.

It's not terribly surprising that we don't know who Irons will be playing; this series has been very tight-lipped about which, if any, classic Watchmen characters will appear. You'll recall that, just about a month ago, Lindelof released an open letter to the public explaining that HBO's Watchmen would not be a straight-up adaptation, but something more closely resembling a "remix", or an "update" of the classic Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons property. Given that we've already seen a largely faithful Watchmen adaptation, we're kinda onboard with his approach ("Sure, why not?") and are curious to see what Lindelof and company have in mind.

At any rate, we're excited to see how Jeremy Irons fits into all this (perhaps he'll be the put-upon manager of the Treasure Island comic book store we glimpsed in those set photos we ran a few weeks ago), and are excited to learn more. In the meantime: where are you folks at on this one? Curious about Watchmen? Mad Online that it's happening? Entirely indifferent? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for more as it becomes available.
