THE LEGACY OF A WHITETAIL DEER HUNTER Gets Its First, Somewhat Disappointing Trailer

The new Jody Hill/Danny McBride joint is hitting Netflix very soon.

Any new film from director Jody Hill should be met with great enthusiasm. After The Foot Fist Way, Observe & Report and his work on Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, he has definitely earned it.

And yet, this trailer for his latest, The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, doesn’t fill me with a lot of anticipation. Check it out and see if you agree:

It doesn't look bad, exactly. In fact, there seems to be a surprising amount of warmth here, which I’m totally interested in seeing. But something also seems to be off. A lot of Hill’s trademark humor and tone appears to be missing from this. Whether that represents the actual film or is just a matter of trailer editing remains to be seen, though Jacob’s review of the film out of SXSW isn’t helping my opinion.

The good news is this is hitting Netflix very soon, so we won’t have to wait long to find out.
