Rebecca Ferguson Is Joining That Sequel to THE SHINING

In which Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP gains a talented actress.

Last year, director Mike Flanagan pulled off the impossible: he made a movie based on Stephen King's Gerald's Game, and not only was it not a complete and total disaster, but it actually kind of ruled. Against all odds, Flanagan and company took some very rough, uncinematic material and turned it into one of the most effective, skin-crawling films we saw last year.

Now Flanagan's back with another highly-questionable Stephen King adaptation, this one based on Doctor Sleep, King's 2013 sequel to The Shining. The novel follows a now fully-grown and wildly alcoholic Danny Torrance as he attempts to protect a little girl with psychic abilities from a group of old-people vampires who travel around in a motor home. It's...probably not the Shining sequel anyone was expecting, and not particularly well-loved by the King faithful.

But, hey, if he pulled off Gerald's Game, maybe there's hope for Doctor Sleep. I mean, if nothing else, he's assembling a helluva cast: first Ewan McGregor signed on to play Danny Torrance, and now (according to Variety) the film's also added Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's Rebecca Ferguson. Hey, we love Rebecca Ferguson!

Nothing further to report at this time, but you know us King nerds here at BMD: we'll be keeping a close eye on this one as it works its way through production, and will hit you with further updates as they roll in. Stay tuned.
