Danny McBride & John Goodman Will Play Awful Televangelists in HBO’s RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES
HBO's enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with noted madmen Jody Hill, Danny McBride and David Gordon Green. Eastbound & Down's success was such that the network convinced the gang to keep it going for four seasons, and the trio's next collaboration, Vice Principals, recently wrapped its two-season run on a delirious high note (bonus: Goggins).
So, what's next? According to Deadline, Hill, McBride and Green are hoping to launch a new series called Righteous Gemstones, and it sounds like it was grown in a lab specifically to appeal to BMD readers: McBride will play Jesse Gemstone, son of televangelist Eli Gemstone (John Goodman)(!!!), whose acerbic preaching style has made him world famous. When Jesse attempts to "expand and modernize" his father's TV ministry, “a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ comes into focus as the Gemstone legacy".
Holy shit.
As of right now, HBO has only ordered a pilot for Righteous Gemstones, which will be filmed before Goodman goes off to shoot the Roseanne-free Roseanne spin-off, The Conners, for ABC. Should HBO decide to move forward with Gemstones (and come on: there's no way they're not moving forward with this), it'll film after production is complete on The Conners this fall.
All of this sounds great to us, and we sincerely hope it pans out. Stay tuned for more on this one as it becomes available.
