The Next Stephen King Adaptation Headed To Theaters Is (Spins Wheel) FIRESTARTER

When Andy Muschietti's IT: Chapter One raked in $700M at the worldwide box office, it seemed all but guaranteed that we'd soon be entering a new (would-be) golden age of Stephen King adaptations, and that's exactly what's happened: in addition to the already-shooting IT: Chapter Two and Hulu's forthcoming Castle Rock series (which, by the way, is excellent), various studios are hard at work on big-screen adaptations of Pet Sematary, Doctor Sleep, The Tommyknockers, and...well, maybe a few more that haven't been announced yet. 

Today we're adding another one to the list: Firestarter, which The Hollywood Reporter says is headed our way from Universal/Blumhouse, with In The Fade director Fatih Akin at the helm and Scott Teems writing the screenplay.

For those not in the know, Firestarter revolves around a young girl with pyrokinetic powers who, along with her father, is forced to go on the run when a shadowy government agency known as "The Shop" decides it would like to exploit said powers on a full-time basis. As Stephen King fans already know, this won't be Firestarter's first at-bat in theaters: the novel was previously adapted for the screen back in 1984, in a film which starred Drew Barrymore, Martin Sheen and Heather Locklear. It's alright.

No word on when Firestarter will begin filming or who might star in it, but of course we'll be keeping our ear to the ground for updates. Stay tuned for more on this one as it becomes available.
