Everyone’s Coming Back For ZOMBIELAND 2 (Well, Maybe Not Bill Murray)

It's finally happening.

Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland was an unexpected hit when it arrived back in 2009, earning reviews, delighting audiences and racking up over $100M worldwide. Naturally, discussions regarding a sequel started up almost immediately, but - in between one thing and another - the project never made it across the starting line.

It certainly didn't help that almost everyone involved with the film (including Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, director Ruben Fleischer and screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese) all found themselves occupied with much bigger things. Oh, sure - every once in a while someone would claim Zombieland 2 was still gonna happen, but it seemed far more likely that the project was well and truly dead.

Well, insert zombie joke here, because...

"After fits and starts, Sony Pictures has reunited the cast of its 2009 surprise hit — including Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin — for Zombieland 2.

Ruben Fleischer, who directed the original and who is behind the studio’s Spider-Man-centric fall tentpole, Venom, is returning to the helmer’s chair."

That's The Hollywood Reporter, uh, reporting that Zombieland 2 is officially a go, with everyone from the first film (minus Bill Murray, obvs) back onboard to reprise their roles from the original. They've even got Wernick and Reese - fresh off their wild success working on the Deadpool franchise - to handle the screenplay. This is truly a best-case scenario, as unlikely as it is exciting.

There's no word on what Zombieland 2 will be about, but THR does note that the film will be going in front of cameras in January, with the intention of hitting theaters in October of next year. So on top of everything else, we're not even gonna be waiting that long for this one! Awesome!

Stay tuned for more on Zombieland 2 as it develops. In the meantime: are you folks as hyped about this as we are? Not so much? Been so long since you visited Zombieland that you're not sure where you stand on a sequel? Sound off in the comments below.
