SDCC 2018: Syfy’s NIGHTFLYERS Looks Kinda Like EVENT HORIZON: THE TV SHOW

George RR Martin's sci-fi/horror series looks familiar, but well-executed.

Here's a fun new thing out of SDCC 2018: the trailer for Nightflyers, a brand-new Syfy series based on the work of George RR Martin. The show - which seems like it's been in development for a long, long time - looks a little bit like Event Horizon: The TV Series...and lord knows we'd give something like that a shot.

See what you think:

So, it almost goes without saying that a lot of the imagery here is very, very familiar (there's a little bit of The Shining in there, a twist of Prometheus, a smidge of Sunshine; they've even got a big, spinning spaceship orb, just like in Event Horizon), but Nightflyers also looks well-executed enough that we'd consider giving it a go.

Plus, the cast is pretty solid: Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire), Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), noted "That Guy" Angus Sampson (Insidious), David Ajala (Fast & Furious 6), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship), and Brían F. O’Byrne (uh, Million Dollar Baby). Not too shabby!

Here's an official plot synopsis, if you'd like to know more:

"In 2093, in hopes of making contact with a mysterious alien life at the edge of our solar system, a group of maverick scientists and a powerful telepath embark on an expedition aboard The Nightflyer. As they race towards first contact, terrifying and violent events begin to occur, causing the once tight-knit crew to mistrust each other. It’s not long before their main mission becomes survival.

NIGHTFLYERS is based on the novella by George R. R. Martin, who also serves as an executive producer on the project, and is produced by Universal Cable Productions and co-produced by Netflix. Jeff Buhler wrote the adaptation for television and is the showrunner and executive producer. Brian Nelson, Mike Cahill and Andrew McCarthy serve as executive producers. Gene Klein, David Bartis and Doug Liman from Hypnotic; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; and Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions also serve as executive producers."

Has anyone read the Martin novella on which Nightflyers is based? Think it'll be enough to sustain a series? Are we right in thinking this looks super-duper derivative? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for more on Nightflyers as it becomes available.
