Jason Statham Claims The Very Likely PG-13 HOBBS AND SHAW Will Be “Fucking Hardcore”

You can safely call me a major Fast and Furious fan, which means I am already all in for this Hobbs and Shaw spinoff that will reteam the series' currently hottest couple, Jason Statham and The Rock, in an adventure of their own. Directed by John Wick and Atomic Blonde's David Leitch, the film is one of the most exciting prospects for next summer’s movie season.

Collider had a chat with Jason Statham about what we can expect from the film’s tone. The money quote is as follows:

I think Dave Leitch’s taste is a little more grounded and a little darker. If you see Atomic Blonde, and it is just superb, his taste is definitely in a world that is sort of how you described it. I think he’s looking to do something that doesn’t look exactly like a Fast movie. Although it’s the Fast characters, he’s trying to do his own thing with it and give it a real sense of credibility. I think Dave is going to get this one gritty, and real, and fucking hardcore.

When Statham predicts the movie will be “fucking hardcore”, he might be doing some disservice to a film that is more than likely planned to be a PG-13 release. There’s nothing wrong with a PG-13 action movie (you all saw Fallout, right?), but it’s also very hard to imagine one being hardcore in the way Statham is describing.

I do believe his stance that the film will be more grounded and gritty than we’re used to from the Fast and Furious series, however. Much as I love Dom’s wild invincibility and ambitious shenanigans, a more toned-down entry like this is something I am definitely here for. Overall, the quote bodes well for what kind of movie Leitch is striving to make, and I'm super excited to start seeing more of it as the film enters production.
