Now They’re Bringing ALF Back And There’s Nothing You Can Do About It

Mere days after learning that the Television Gods are kicking around the possibility of a Frasier revival comes word that another heavily-aged sitcom may be getting a second lease on life: according to a new report over at TV Line, an ALF reboot is in the works. 

Here's what they're saying:

"Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the beloved ’80s alien sitcom ALF, TVLine has learned exclusively. The original series — which centered on a hairy, sarcastic extraterrestrial who is taken in by a middle-class family — ran for four seasons NBC, with the series finale airing March 24, 1990. All told, 102 episodes were produced."

Yes, in a development that only '80s kids could possibly give a shit about, ALF - the beloved, wisecracking puppet with a taste for cat blood, ill-advised hijinks, and a proven talent for infuriating his human masters - is headed back to television. If you're wondering why anyone might consider doing this, I'd point you towards the ratings (but not necessarily the star, ahem) of ABC's Roseanne reboot, which have all but guaranteed that we have many, many more sitcom resurrections to look forward to in the near future. 

Perhaps next we'll bring back Small Wonder, the delightful series about a robot girl with freakishly dead eyes. Maybe Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot can be stripped of their dignity and jammed back into their old costumes for a Perfect Strangers reunion. If we get really lucky, maybe Fish Police will make a comeback. Or, God help us, Joey.

TV Line says Warner Bros. is currently looking for a writer to spearhead this project, so we've got some time before the ALF reboot arrives. Personally, we'd like to see WB take a cue from their own DC Universe for this project: let's really get to the dark heart of ALF. Let's see him eat a live cat, in one take, his black eyes rolling back into his head in orgasmic delight. Let's see ALF kill Willy and assume his identity, and have Willy's wife be totally cool with it. Let's find out that Melmac was a prison colony.
