The First Trailer For LIZZIE Is Sharper Than an Axe Blade

Craig William Macneill's latest looks right up our alley.

If you asked me if I honestly thought we needed another movie based on the Lizzie Borden murders, I'd probably tell you no. This is a story we're all familiar with, one that's been approached from a multitude of angles in a variety of forms. Hell, the Lizzie Borden legend even has its own nursery rhyme ("Lizzie Borden with an axe/gave her mother forty whacks...").

But if we're talking about a Lizzie Borden movie directed by the guy who made the wildly undervalued 2015 indie horror film, The Boy, and the legitimately unnerving Channel Zero: Candle Cove? And maybe it also starts Kristen Stewart (Personal Shopper) and Chloe Sevigny (Zodiac)?

Well, in that case, all bets are off. That's a movie I definitely want to see.

This is the first trailer for Craig William Macneill's Lizzie, which debuted to a positive response at Sundance earlier this year. Obviously, the subject matter's familiar to anyone who's ever heard the Lizzie Borden story, but this also looks like a top-shelf telling of that tale, with an outstanding cast and Macneill calling the shots. Maybe it won't end up being the most historically accurate take on the material, but so what? We just love a well-made axe murderer story, and we'll happily sit down for Macneill's version.

Here's an official plot synopsis:

"Academy Award® nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, “Big Love”) stars as Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. After a lifetime of loneliness, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in housemaid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart) and their secret intimacy sparks an unthinkable act. Director Craig William Macneill (The Boy (2015), “Channel Zero: Candle Cove”) explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams."

Lizzie arrives on September 14th. You gonna give it a shot or what? Sound off below.
