Apple Moves Forward With A Series Based on Isaac Asimov’s FOUNDATION Trilogy

Pay attention to the goings-on in Hollywood for long enough, and you'll inevitably start clocking the various projects that find themselves stuck in development hell. The Crow reboot's been in the works for years, seemingly unable to take flight. Gemini Man's another one, though that film's finally en route with Will Smith starring and Ang Lee directing. This weekend's The Happytown Murders is yet another example, although a quick glance at that film's first batch of reviews indicates it was, perhaps, better left unmade.

And then there's Foundation, the sprawling Isaac Asimov sci-fi trilogy that's been kicking around town since time out of mind. The project's gone through a number of permutations and false starts over the years, drifting from one studio to the next and attracting one writer or creative visionary after another, . Most recently, the whole thing was almost a TV series at HBO (looks like Jonathan Nolan was developing it a few years before turning his attentions to Westworld), but that version didn't pan out, either. It has often seemed uncrackable.

And now, it's finally getting made.

According to Deadline, Apple has ordered Foundation to series, with David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman scripting. Assuming the show remains true to the source material, its timeline will span thousands of years and revolve around The Foundation, "a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it." It's way, way more complicated than that - Foundation also deals with predicting the future using psychohistory, a rogue mutant known as The Mule, philosophy, you name it. It's a gigantic piece of work. 

And now, at last, it's gonna be a TV show. There's no timeline on when the series may go into production or who might star in it, but now that it's obtained a 10-episode order, we imagine that stuff will start coming together soon enough.
