UPDATED: Report Suggests Henry Cavill Is No Longer DC’s Superman

UPDATE: Following the publication of THR's story, WB issued the following statement: "While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged." 

Say what you will about the DCU. Say what you will about the way Zack Snyder portrayed iconic DC characters from film to film. Say what you will about the wonky VFX employed by last year's Justice League. At the end of the day, Henry Cavill was always a great Superman waiting to happen.

It appears that opportunity may have officially passed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill has parted ways with Warner Bros., and will no longer be playing Superman in the DCU. No reason for the split has been given, nor has the news been officially confirmed by either Cavill's reps or the studio (see update above).

Of course this means that a new Superman will need to be cast, but Warner Bros. may take their time making that happen: THR's report says the studio's current focus is on a Supergirl movie, and that the next solo Superman is probably years away from happening. What this means for the state of the current DCU (which includes Wonder Woman 1984 and James Wan's forthcoming Aquaman) remains to be seen, but with Cavill (allegedly) out and Ben Affleck seemingly done playing Batman, it certainly feels like the DC "Snyderverse" is due for some kind of reckoning.
