Let Lady Gaga Uplift Your Spirits With A STAR IS BORN’s “Shallow”
Some days, you need an emotional lift wherever you can get one. For many, today is one of those days. So it’s a good thing WB picked today to release the video for the lead single from A Star Is Born. It’s called “Shallow,” it’s sung by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and it’ll almost certainly be up for an Original Song statue at the Academy Awards.
Get this in your earholes:
It’s a good song, making the most of its singers’ voices, with the kind of broadly identifiable lyrical content that makes for a powerful ballad. I haven’t seen the film, so I can’t comment as to its place within it, but as a piece on its own - even as a tie-in music video! - it’s a strong performance. When Gaga starts belting out the wordless bridge of this song, it’s hard not to get swept up in it.*
Look: we already know A Star Is Born is going to be a hit. It’s received 95% on Rotten Tomatoes thus far; all the other versions of the story have been hits; its emotional story is being marketed extremely well; visually, it's super-appealing cross between music-video slickness and handheld honesty; and it stars Lady Gaga, one of the most well-known stars in the world. You can probably put money on the soundtrack selling (or streaming) super-well too.
A Star Is Born hits cinemas on October 5th - next week! - and will probably continue to dominate headlines as we head into awards season. Buckle up.
* I’ll admit to bias here: I totally bawled when I saw Lady Gaga play a show in Montreal last year. Bite me.
