Idris Elba Joins Tom Hooper’s CATS: Now What Are We Supposed To Do?

We must be strong.

I need all of you to sit down. I have troubling news.

According to Variety, Idris Elba has joined the cast of Tom Hooper's Cats, a movie based on the long-running Broadway musical about (checks notes) cats.

Some of us thought we might be able to skip Cats entirely, understanding implicitly that a film adaptation of Cats directed by Tom Hooper and starring Taylor Swift and James Corden would not be a thing we would enjoy. Elba's involvement makes that all but impossible: what are we supposed to do now, not see it? Come on.

Variety's report does not say which cat Idris Elba will be playing in the film, but unless you're intimately familiar with the various cats in Cats, not knowing that piece of information probably won't matter (note: I have never seen Cats, but I have had the plot explained to me on multiple occasions and read Wikipedia's plot synopsis, and I'm still no closer to understanding what this thing is). We know that Idris Elba will be costumed as a cat - will probably even be singing as a cat - and, really, that's all that matters.

UPDATE: Deadline says Elba is playing Macavity. Here is a song about Macavity.

Jesus Christ.

Hug your loved ones. Tell your friends how much they mean to you. Be safe, and be strong. We're all gonna get through this together.
