Holy Shit They’re Rebooting SHREK Now
According to Variety, Universal Pictures has tasked Despicable Me producer Chris Meledandri with rebooting both the Shrek and Puss 'n' Boots franchises, with an eye towards "finding ... fresh story lines to reintroduce the lovable ogre and the sword-wielding feline to new generations of moviegoers."
Apparently, Meledandri is keen to get the entire vocal team back together for this venture, which means Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers and Antonio Banderas are probably fielding very generous offers even as we speak. Whether or not they're interested in returning is another matter, and will probably depend on what these "fresh story lines" look like (and how generous those offers are).
Says Meledandri:
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
What's interesting about Variety's report is that no actual work seems to have taken place on these reboots: Universal (whose parent company, Comcast, purchased DreamWorks Animation back in 2016 and is thus free to do whatever they'd like with the Shrek universe) wants to do it, they've got a guy who's willing to spearhead the relaunch, and ... that's it. This report is more a statement of intent than anything else, in other words, but obviously - given the outsize role Shrek has played in the online world over the past decade - we figured it was news you'd want to be made aware of. So here we are.
What do you think, internet? You interested in a relaunch of the Shrek universe? Think they oughtta leave well enough alone? Can you, or one of your Millennial friends, please explain to us Olds what the deal is with Shrek memes? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for further updates as they roll in.
