Lynne Ramsay’s Next Project Could Be An “Epic Environmental Horror”

The director of YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE could venture into a new genre with her next film.

Lynne Ramsay has quickly earned a place as one of the most interesting and talented directors working today. After the acclaimed We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011 and this year’s You Were Never Really Here, everyone is eager to see what she’ll take on next.

And, hey, according to Variety, there’s hope we won’t have to wait another six years between projects! In a recent interview, Ramsay stated that she’s been writing a new screenplay, one she refers to as an “epic environmental horror.” Considering her penchant for bringing dark themes such as grief, death, and guilt to the screen, horror seems like the next logical and exciting step for the director. While she admits she isn’t sure where the project is headed yet, it’s heartening to hear that she has a new original script on the horizon.

Feeling the pressure to avoid another long gap between films, Ramsay added that she’s “working on a few other projects as well." Though reluctant to share any details (since the projects are in the very early stages of writing), she did say:

“I want every film to be different. I’d love to make a comedy. People go, ‘Oh, your work’s so dark.’ I’m like, ‘Is it?’ Because I always put some kind of comedy elements [in] as well. You’re always exploring as a filmmaker, y’know? But it takes a while to make films, unfortunately. Especially if you write them as well.”

BMD is very much a pro-Lynne Ramsay household, and we're prepared to wait as long as it takes for whatever she does next. We’ll keep you posted as more news rolls in about her future projects. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
