Nicolas Cage’s Next Movie May Be Even Wilder Than MANDY

We didn't think such a thing was possible. And yet...

Panos Cosmatos' Mandy easily ranks among our favorite films of 2018. Hallucinogenic, horrific and ferociously unique, it also features one of Nic Cage's best, most unhinged performances (from a career that was already chock full of 'em). To watch the unbridled insanity of that film is to think, "There's no way he'll ever top this."

Well, about that: during a recent appearance at the 3rd International Film Festival of Macao, Cage got to talking about his next project, Sion Sono's Prisoners of The Ghostland, and if what he says is true, it may well give Mandy a run for its money in the holy-shit-bananas department.

Here's how he described the film (via Screen Anarchy):

“I’m thrilled about it! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It might be the wildest movie I’ve ever made, and that’s saying something. It’s out there. I wear a skintight black leather jumpsuit with grenades attached to different body parts, and if I don’t rescue the governor’s daughter from this state line where they’re all ghosts and bring her back they’re gonna blow me up. It’s just crazy. It’s way out there.”

Holy shit. Did the ghosts put Cage in the grenade jumpsuit, or did the ghosts kidnap the governor's daughter? Are we to understand there's an entire state filled with ghosts? What do ghosts even want with the governor's daughter? Beyond the obvious fact that he'd look good in a skintight leather jumpsuit, why was Nicolas Cage's character chosen for this particular mission? We don't know the answers to any of these questions, but that's fine. Gives us something to chew on during slow news days.

We don't know when Prisoners of The Ghostland will arrive, but it's scheduled to begin shooting next spring. It probably goes without saying that we're dying to learn more about this one, and will be keeping all of you informed as further updates roll in. Stay tuned.
