The MINECRAFT Movie Has Found Its (Third) Director

Warner Bros. has been trying to get a Minecraft movie off the ground for years, only to have each of their attempts implode long before crossing the starting line. At one point, Night at The Museum's Shawn Levy was attached to helm the film. Then came (checks notes) It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob McIlhenney. While that switcheroo was going on, various stars (including Steve Carell) also flirted with appearing in the project, though nothing ever worked out. 

But WB's determined to build a Minecraft franchise if it's the last thing they do, and now they're ready to give it another go: according to Variety, Raising Victor Vargas' Peter Sollett has just signed on to write and direct the film, which will tell the story of "a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld."

This is all well and good, of course, but one can't help but wonder if the time for a Minecraft movie hasn't already passed. The rights to adapt this game were purchased five years ago, a veritable eternity in Pop Culture Time. As one of our contributors pointed out on the BMD Slack: maybe everyone's time and effort would be wiser spent on, say, a Fortnite movie?

Anyway, if nothing else, we're very curious to see what the Minecraft movie looks like. Are we talking real humans photographed against the game's iconically blocky backdrop? Will it be fully animated? How much screentime will be spent just standing around, watching the film's characters burrow their way into the ground, looking for minerals and whatnot? Guess we'll find out.
