Michelle Yeoh Is Getting Her Own STAR TREK Series

Yass Empress.

Star Trek: Discovery is about to start up again. Short Treks just finished, to high acclaim. A new Captain Picard series is in pre-production, alongside an animated comedy from Rick & Morty's Mike McMahan, a Starfleet Academy series, and others. It's a good time to be a Star Trek fan, and it just got better: one of those shows will be a Discovery spinoff starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.*

According to Variety, the new show will be written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, both executive story editors and writers on Discovery, and will - along with all this new Trek material - be produced by Alex Kurtzman's company Secret Hideout, alongside CBS and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman's take:

"Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou."

Yeoh's:

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”

Aside from the obvious radness of a Yeoh-led Star Trek show, building on her rekindled popularity thanks to Crazy Rich Asians, a Georgiou show could be quite an interesting and unique addition to the franchise. At the end of Discovery's first season, the character was inducted into the ethically-dubious Federation intelligence agency Section 31, which was a recurring element of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and one of the more intriguing unexplored bits of canon. Her induction is a deleted scene, technically, but that storyline will apparently be incorporated into both the new show and Discovery's second season.

That season premieres this Thursday (!). Get in amongst it.

* Technically, the Mirror Universe version of Philippa Georgiou, which makes this all the more interesting.
