New CREEPSHOW TV Series Might Adapt One Of Stephen King’s Gnarliest Short Stories
As we learned not long ago, special effects master and filmmaker Greg Nicotero is working on a new Creepshow TV series for Shudder, which will feature stories written by the likes of Stephen King and Joe Hill. Each installment of the anthology series will be helmed by a different director, with Nicotero – who also serves as creative director and producer – tackling the first episode.
According to a new report in Production Weekly, we may have some interesting details about Nicotero's segment, which is said to be based on "Survivor Type," one of the short stories included in Stephen King's Skeleton Crew. Having read the majority of King's short stories, only two have ever really, truly scared the bejesus out of me: "The Jaunt" (also featured in Skeleton Crew) and "Survivor Type." The former is an exceptional piece of psychological terror, while the latter is perhaps the most disturbing and nauseating thing I've read this side of Chuck Palahniuk's "Guts."
"Survivor Type" tells the story of Richard Pine, a shady surgeon who was smuggling a large amount of heroin on a cruise ship when it sank somewhere in the Pacific. Stranded on a deserted island, Pine keeps a diary of his days, which grow increasingly dire until he's finally forced to resort to horrific means to survive. You can probably guess what that is, and it is not pleasant in the slightest. Even King himself was repulsed by the story, and he wrote the damn thing.
Like the original Creepshow movies, the new series will function as an anthology that promises to be "the most fun you'll ever have being scared." Nicotero has a special history with the cult classic films: He met makeup legend and mentor Tom Savini on the set of the first one, and went on to collaborate with George A. Romero on Day of the Dead and Creepshow 2. The new series will premiere on Shudder sometime this year.
