The First Trailer For THE BOYS Features Superheroes Behaving Badly

Let's take a look at Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg's latest comic book adaptation.

Years ago I had a roommate who was super into comics. Through his collection, I read the entire runs of Y: The Last Man, Preacher, Ex Machina, 100 Bullets, and many others. One series he loved more than the rest was Garth Ennis' The Boys, a wildly R-rated superhero satire which sorta felt like the comic book equivalent of that old Onion post about Marilyn Manson going door-to-door trying to shock people.

Was it transgressive? Oh, for sure. Was it childish? Absolutely. Are those two things I normally enjoy? You bet your sweet ass. And yet, The Boys just never worked for me. Its attempts to offend were too transparent, its violence too gleefully in-your-face (see also: Crossed). I read a few of the trades and gave up. 

For a while, Hollywood was interested in turning The Boys into a feature film (if memory serves, Adam McKay came close to directing an adaptation at one point), but - as was the case with another seemingly unadaptable Garth Ennis comic series - every attempt fizzled out until Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg came along.

That, gentle readers, is the first trailer for Rogen and Goldberg's The Boys, which is due to hit Amazon sometime later this year. It's hard to tell just from this single minute's worth of footage, but it seems like they've certainly nailed the "supheroes gone wild" tone of the comic series. Show looks good, too - well photographed and decidedly not cheap. Will The Boys succeed in the same way that Rogen and Goldberg's other comic book TV show (Preacher) succeeded? We'll have to wait and see, but this is a step in the right direction.
