Those Freaky-Ass Fish Dudes From AQUAMAN Are Getting Their Own Movie

Just about everyone saw James Wan's Aquaman (it's past the $1B mark at the worldwide box office, for those of you keeping score at home), which means that just about all of you will probably remember the weird, freaky-looking fish people pictured at the top of this post. Those monsters are known as the Trench, and are apparently something of a recent addition to Aquaman mythology, former Atlanteans who found themselves cut off from the rest of their people when their kingdom sank (at which point they devolved into the bloodthirsty creatures seen in Aquaman). 

The Trench are very cool and very scary, which means they'll probably make decent villains in The Trench, the "horror-tinged" Aquaman spin-off currently being assembled over at Warner Bros. Here's the news, via The Hollywood Reporter:

"Warners has hired newbie scribes Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman.

Wan and Peter Safran will produce the project, titled The Trench, which would be much more modestly budgeted than the normal DC superhero tentpole."

This is an interesting development, but not an entirely surprising one. As we've already noted, Aquaman made an absolute killing at the box office, and with no sequel yet in the works (don't worry, it'll happen), it makes sense that WB might be looking for other ways to mine the property while that gets going. Plus, I mean, come on: who doesn't want to see a horror/superhero spin-off centered around those dudes? They're rad as hell.
