Teaser For THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE Sequel Is An ASMR Nightmare

Mike Flanagan's haunting of Netflix continues...

Following the events of the first season of The Haunting of Hill House, it seemed unlikely that Mike Flanagan would return to Netflix for a follow-up unless he could find an organic way to continue the story loosely based on Shirley Jackson's classic horror novel. But lo and behold, Netflix has a spooky little surprise for us today:

You don't really need to guess because it's right there in the header image – the next season of Flanagan's The Haunting is titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, and is based on/inspired by the works of Henry James, specifically The Turn of the Screw. Netflix additionally sent out a press release announcing a new multi-year overall deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner Trevor Macy. That pairing has yielded some excellent horror titles, including Hill HouseGerald's Game, and Oculus, as well as Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep (which arrives this November).

The Haunting of Bly Manor will be an all-new story with new characters, but given Flanagan's affinity for easter eggs, I reckon we'll be seeing some familiar faces – or familiar ghosts, at the very least. For those unfamiliar, the Henry James novella (originally published in 1898), centers on a governess caring for two children at a remote estate in Essex, where she soon becomes convinced that the place is haunted. Like Hill House, James' tale is also a gothic horror story, though it's never made clear if the evil forces at work or real or imagined by the governess – a psychologic element that's very much in keeping with the previous season.

The second season of The Haunting anthology series will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2020.
