Welcome to this, the final post of the Birth.Movies.Death Alternate Oscars for 2019. Every week since the official Oscar nominations were posted, we’ve been running polls to determine the best of the films Oscar forgot. We picked the nominees, you voted, and now it’s come down to this: the winners. They are as you voted, and they are as follows.

For those of you keeping track: that’s six wins for Annihilation, four for Suspiria, two each for Hereditary and Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and one each for Mandy, First Reformed, Black Panther, Sorry To Bother You, Burning, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Less spread-around than these things usually are, but hey, Annihilation’s a great movie and richly deserving of these awards, symbolic though they may be.

Interestingly, we ran a ranked, weighted ballot for Best Picture this year, which revealed some odd quirks. The actual Oscars never reveal voting data or trends (which I'd really love to see given this year's winner), but we're not the actual Oscars:

  • Annihilation scored the most first, second, and third-place votes, winning comfortably without any serious competition.
  • Paddington 2 ranked seventh overall, but had the second most first-place votes.
  • Paddington 2 also ranked near the top in eighth-to-tenth-place votes, making it easily the most divisive film in the list.
  • With the smallest release of the bunch, Anna And The Apocalypse ended up at the bottom of most ballots - but it came around the middle in terms of first-place votes. Few saw it - but those who did loved it.
  • For some reason, First Reformed towered over the rest in fourth-place votes, which along with other high rankings was enough to push it to second place overall.

Thanks to everyone who voted. This is always a fun feature to run, both in terms of picking the nominees (which is a combination of fun and stressful) and seeing how you all vote on them. Looking forward to seeing what forgotten films we can honour next year...
