Hollywood Now Threatening To Make A Prequel To GREASE

It's been just over four decades since Randal Kleiser's Grease landed in theaters and instantly cemented its status as a no-shit pop culture classic. In the years that followed, other Greases came along - an ill-advised sequel; a live production which aired on network television; countless performances by high school drama clubs - but none have come within spitting distance of Kleiser's version. It's iconic.

And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it's getting a prequel.

To be called Summer Loving, the project's being developed by the folks over at Paramount, who just signed John August (Big Fish, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) to pen the film's screenplay. The plot, as the title implies, will revolve around the courtship of Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy Olsson, as recounted in the Grease tune "Summer Nights". If that's not the most exciting thing you've heard all day, it's probably because it's not very exciting.

As of this writing, there's no indication who might direct or star in Summer Loving, (please, god, do not make Travolta and Newton-John cameo as Danny and Sandy's parents; they've been through enough), but hiring a screenwriter of August's caliber suggests the studio's taking this one far more seriously than most of the Birth.Movies.Death. staff will.
