AVENGERS: ENDGAME Might Have A $300M Opening At The Box Office

It's hard to imagine, but it looks like that's where we're headed.

Seventeen years ago, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man hit theaters with an explosive $114M opening at the box office, a figure I recall being amazed by at the time. Over $100M? In a single weekend? Wow. Will wonders never cease!

These days, $100M+ openings are a dime a dozen. The real rarities are the $200M+ openings, though those have been happening with increasing frequency, as well. Just last year, Black Panther opened over $200M, while Avengers: Infinity War opened over $250M. Now it appears we're on the precipice of the first $300M opening, and - unsurprisingly - it seems that the first film with a real shot at taking that record will be a Marvel joint.

According to Deadline, advanced tickets sales for Avengers: Endgame are somewhere in the $120-140M range (worth noting: Endgame demolished Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record for day-one advanced ticket sales, which came in just over $100M), which has some analysts putting it within spitting distance of that seemingly-impossible $300M opening.

You're probably wondering how Endgame's three-hour run-time will impact things. Don't worry- Deadline's done the math:

"When Endgame first hit tracking, we reported that an unprecedented $300M opening for Endgame wasn’t out of the question despite the pic having a 3 hour and 1 minute running time. (Avengers: Infinity War had a running time of 2 hours and 29 minutes, and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens clocked in at 2 hours and 16 minutes.) Math provided to Deadline by B.O. analysts specified that four or five showtimes a day of Endgame on 5-8 screens per location, at a 70% capacity at 12,000 U.S. auditoriums could hit that box office threshold."

Is this news? No, not really. We all know Endgame's gonna be a massive hit. But if you're a nerd for box office stats (as some of us are here at BMD), this weekend seems primed to offer up a few new records, and that's kinda fun! Do with this information what you will, and stay tuned for more on Avengers: Endgame - including our review! - in the very near future.
