Just Look At This Gorgeous Cover Art For THE SHINING In 4K

Some things are worth quadruple-dipping for.

We don't typically cover 4K releases here at Birth.Movies.Death. - if we stopped to pay attention to each new movie with a fancy-pants 4K release, we'd never get anything else done - but every once in a while we'll spot one that's worthy of our attentions. This just-announced 4K edition of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, for instance.

Just look at this thing:

What's it include? Well, that's where things get a little less interesting. Says the press release:

"The Shining Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack features an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with the feature film in 4K with HDR, a Blu-ray disc with the film in high definition and the special features in high definition, and a Digital version of the movie. Fans can also own The Shining in 4K Ultra HD via purchase from select digital retailers beginning on October 1. 

The Ultra HD Blu-ray of The Shining will include more than three hours of previously released special features:

  • Audio commentary by Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown and Stanley Kubrick biographer John Baxter
  • Video from the Overlook: Crafting The Shining
  • The Visions of Stanley Kubrick
  • The Making of The Shining
  • Composer Wendy Carlos reflects on working with complex auteur Stanley Kubrick and developing music scores for The Shining and A Clockwork Orange"

In other words: in terms of special features, this is the same version of The Shining you probably already own, but now it's got an excellent new cover and the film itself will be presented in stunning 4K (this same 4K restoration will screen at the Cannes Film Festival next week, and will likely enjoy a limited theatrical rollout prior to hitting home video). That's fine, though. Having owned The Shining on VHS, then DVD and Blu-ray, I'm more than willing to shell out for this version just to have the 4K version on-hand.

Now do Eyes Wide Shut, Warner Bros.
