UNCHARTED Movie Sets 2020 Release Date, Is Totally Happening Now

We're not even sure if we'll believe this when we see it.

Brace yourselves. Sony has set, according to THR, a December 2020 release date for the long-anticipated adaptation of its wildly successful Indiana Jones-inspired video game Uncharted. It's there, it's on the calendar, it's definitely happening this time. It'll release on the same day as Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake, too, so expect gamers and musical theatre nerds to have a minor culture war that weekend. Or not.

Before you go getting all excited, it's important to remember that this isn't the first time a release date has been set for this movie. Sony has been trying to bring Uncharted to live-action for nearly as long as Microsoft has been trying to do the same with Halo. It's become a running joke, to the extent that even after I see the movie, I won't be able to rule out the possibility that it was a hallucination.

For those who haven't kept up with the saga, the current version of the movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) from a script by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker. It'll follow Tom Holland as a young version of series hero Nathan Drake, in some sort of globe-trotting adventure in which he just-barely lands perilous jumps and shoots approximately a stadium's worth of goons.

Interestingly, this news also comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Sony is launching a new division, PlayStation Productions, to make movies and TV shows based on PlayStation properties. Previously, the platform-holder had licensed a couple titles out to other studios, but the creation of the new division suggests many new projects could be in the works. In a THR interview, studio chiefs Asad Qizilbash and Shawn Layden certainly demonstrate they've learned lessons from other video game adaptations. Worryingly, though, Layden also says they're "taking inspiration" from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. God help us all if there's some kind of PlayStation Cinematic Universe in the offing.

Uncharted will, and I use "will" in the absolute loosest sense of the word, release on December 18th, 2020
