Andy Serkis Could Direct VENOM 2
Emboldened once again by their Spidey-success, Sony is gearing up for the sequel to last year's most hallowed cinematic experience: Venom. According to THR, the studio is currently meeting with "several filmmakers" to potentially direct the sequel. Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first Venom, is not returning for the sequel (probably for the best, if we're being honest), which is based on a script by Kelly Marcel – easily the most exciting name involved with Venom 2 at this point.
But back to those directors – THR reports that Andy Serkis is one of the filmmakers who met with Sony for the Venom sequel. Though better-known for his mo-cap work in films like The Lord of the Rings and the recent Planet of the Apes series, Serkis has transitioned behind the camera over the past few years with films like... (checks notes) Breathe and Mowgli (aka that other Jungle Book movie). Still, his mo-cap expertise would certainly come in handy in the Venom-verse, not that Tom Hardy needs any help. Venom, after all, was merely a feature-length metaphor for Hardy's tumultuous relationship with his own vocal chords. But if Michelle Williams were to hook up with a wiley alien symbiote, she might appreciate some pointers.
Serkis would also potentially have a friend on board this particular ship, as Woody Harrelson – who starred with Serkis in War for the Planet of the Apes – is expected to reprise his post-credits Venom role as Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage. Listen, whether Sony hires Andy Serkis or Tom Hooper (have they seen the Cats trailer yet?!) or a sentient pair of Crocs, there's only one thing we really wanna see in this Venom sequel: The righteous return of Eddie Brock's Brock Report. And also maybe Woody Harrelson's voice coming out of a big red digital Venom monster.
