It’s Official: Andy Serkis Will Direct VENOM 2

A few weeks ago we learned that Andy Serkis was among the directors currently being considered to helm Venom 2, the sequel to last year's surprisingly watchable Venom. Today we're learning that he got the job, via The Hollywood Reporter:

"The filmmaker has closed a deal to direct Venom 2, Sony's sequel to the 2018 film that grossed $856 million at the global box office. The sequel, part of the company's stable of Spider-Man related and Marvel-centric characters, will once again star Tom Hardy as the journalist who joins with an alien symbiote."

Is this the most exciting choice Sony could have made? Perhaps not. But does it make sense? Absolutely. Serkis' experience in the world of mo-cap and VFX was apparently a factor in the studio's decision, and that experience is hard to argue with. The bigger test for Venom 2 will be the screenplay, which we know virtually nothing about other than the fact that it was written by Kelly Marcel (who wrote Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr. Banks). We also assume it'll pick up where Venom left off, with a very pissed-off looking Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson in the funniest goddamn wig you can imagine) breaking out of prison and making good on his threat to unleash "carnage". 

As of now, there's no release date for Venom 2, but we'll keep you informed as further updates roll in. Stay tuned.
