Brad Pitt’s Not Gonna Spoil One Of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD’s Biggest Mysteries

So don't even ask.

Warning: The post contains spoilers for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

One of the many, many topics of conversation in the wake of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood revolves around one of the film's bigger unsolved mysteries: namely, did veteran stunt man and all-around BFF Cliff Booth actually murder his wife with a speargun? The film certainly seems to imply that, but never comes right out and answers the question.

In an effort to get to the bottom of things, the L.A. Times put the question to Pitt - who claims to know a definite answer - directly. Here's his response:

“That, I will never tell."

Yes, despite being one of maybe two people in the entire world who know whether or not Cliff Booth actually shot his wife, Billie (played by Rebecca Gayheart in the film), Pitt's not talking. When pressed, he wonders why anyone might spoil that, and we can't help but agree. Leaving that question unanswered forces the audience to wrestle with Cliff's morality, to weigh the possibility against the good things Cliff is seen doing throughout Tarantino's film (would any amount of good deeds outweigh a speargun murder of one's wife? Probably not!). It's obvious, given the discussions that have taken place around this element of the film, that some audience members would have preferred a more explicit resolution to the issue, but we cannot say we agree with the sentiment.

Anyway, condolences to anyone who was hoping to have this mystery solved. Doesn't appear to be in the cards.
