Natalie Portman Has An Obsession In New LUCY IN THE SKY Trailer

"Not everyone can handle the ride."

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for Lucy in the Sky, the upcoming existential astronaut drama from Legion and Fargo mastermind Noah Hawley – whose involvement should tell you that this movie isn't in the same ballpark as your average space movie. Natalie Portman stars as the eponymous Lucy, a tenacious astronaut whose intoxicating experiences drifting above the earth have forced her to see her life back home in a different (and more disappointing) light:

As our own Scott Wampler pointed out in his write-up of the first trailer, Lucy in the Sky is very loosely based on the true story of real-life astronaut Lisa Nowak, who drove across the country to confront and allegedly kidnap Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, who was having a relationship with an astronaut with whom Lucy had previously had an affair. Despite my fascination with Nowak's story, I was somehow unaware of this connection until today (clearly I should read our site more often!), and it definitely gives the trailer more dimension. Without knowing that, the film looks like a female-driven and more cerebral take on similar space dramas that usually focus on male protagonists (lookin' at you, Chris Nolan).

Here's the official synopsis for Lucy in the Sky, which also stars Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, Nick Offerman, and Ellen Burstyn, and hits theaters this fall:

In LUCY IN THE SKY, Natalie Portman plays Lucy Cola, a strong woman whose determination and drive as an astronaut take her to space, where she’s deeply moved by the transcendent experience of seeing her life from afar. Back home as Lucy’s world suddenly feels too small, her connection with reality slowly unravels.
