Sounds Like Michael Fassbender Will Headline Taika Waititi’s NEXT GOAL WINS
Here's some fun news: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Fassbender is in final talks to headline Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins, based on the 2014 soccer (or, to the rest of the world, football) documentary of the same name. For those unfamiliar with said doc, THR's got a pretty good recap:
"Next Goal Wins is an underdog story that follows the national football team of American Samoa and their coach, Thomas Rongen, as they try to transform from perennial losers into a FIFA World Cup-qualifying outfit."
Assuming things go according to plan here, Fassbender will play Rongen, while the rest of the team will be cast with Fa'afafine actors. The plan calls for Next Goal Wins to be a dramedy, a genre Waititi has shown no small amount of talent in over the course of his filmography. It'll also probably be great and inspiring and touching, yes, but we imagine it'll also be very, very funny. It'll also be interesting to see Fassbender in a movie like that. Dude usually skews darker.
Anyway, we're excited to hear Fassbender's joining the cast, and look forward to learning more about Next Goal Wins as it works its way through production. Stay tuned for further updates as they roll in. Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, already racking up quite a number of Takes (and, yes, rave festival reviews) lands in theaters on October 18th.
