So, here's something interesting: Ava DuVernay, currently gearing up to helm New Gods for Warner Bros., has just signed on to direct the pilot for HBO Max's DMZ, based on Brian Wood's Vertigo Comics series of the same name. Apparently the plan calls for her to helm the pilot before shooting begins on New Gods, which means the pilot for DMZ oughtta film early next year.
For those unfamiliar with the series, DMZ is set in the near future, where a new civil war has resulted in Manhattan being turned into a demilitarized zone. The bulk of the series follows various characters (including a journalist by the name of Matty Roth) as they attempt to navigate - and, more importantly, survive - life within the DMZ.
Assuming DMZ moves beyond the pilot stage, we imagine it'd be a timely, gritty series, and DuVernay's certainly an interesting choice to handle the premiere. There's nothing further to report at this time, but now that this pilot has a director, we imagine casting announcements and the like oughtta be along somewhat shortly. Stay tuned for those, and do sound off in the comments below if you've got anything to add here.
